About Us

Genoa’s Midwest Martial Arts Academy began its journey in teaching high quality martial arts instruction in August of 1995.  To date, we have trained literally hundreds of students all across the Northern Illinois area.  On October 22nd, 2007 we began offering the same high quality martial arts instruction in our hometown community of Genoa, Illinois.

Sensei David Funk is our chief instructor. He holds a 5th Degree Black Belt in Isshin-Ryu Karate, and is also a Certified Black Belt in Progressive Fighting Concepts: a mixed martial art.  With over 70 tournament victories at local and national levels, and a passion for teaching martial arts, Sensei Dave is quickly becoming one of the most sought after instructors in the area for those looking for high quality instruction, seminars, demonstrations, and expert advice on important issues.

Sensei Monika Funk holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Karate, and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.  She also has experience in Judo, Jujuitsu, Hapkido and Arnis.  Highly passionate about self-defense, Sensei Monika teaches our Women’s Self-Defense Classes, held weekly at our studio.
